Presentation of the gallery
Established in Porto in 1995, the Presença Gallery was one of the first to join what would become the Porto Arts Block. Since its inception, the gallery has maintained a constant dialogue with Portuguese and international artists, working with curators, creating solo exhibitions, group exhibitions and specific projects in its premises in Porto.
The gallery is engaged in a permanent exchange of ideas with institutions, curators, critics, collectors and all those involved in the art world in order to achieve greater dissemination of its artists and we strive for their continued practice, constantly introducing new works into the art sphere.
In 2022, the gallery changed its director, deepening its long-term commitment to exhibiting the artists it represents and finding new talent to present to an international audience. Galeria Presença brings together artists from all walks of life and at different stages of their careers and is proudly open to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of contemporary art.
Presentation of the artist in focus
Diogo Pimentão (Lisbon, 1973) lives and works in London. He studied at Ar.Co. in Lisbon, at the Sculpture Seminar in Gotland, and at the International Sculpture Center in Péro Pinheiro, Portugal. The practice of drawing, especially using graphite, is the central axis of his work. He conceives it as a form of contact between a material and a support through a repetitive gesture, sometimes blind or procedural, but also frequently employs cement in tension with paper. His research combines randomness with a rigorous technique through traces, marks, lines, or strokes. The sheet can be folded, raised in space, or placed on the ground.
His work is present in European art centers and institutions as well as in significant private collections, both in Europe and the United States. This includes the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (Paris), Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou (Paris), Pomeranz Collection (Vienna), Collection Lambert (Avignon), European Central Bank, Serralves Foundation (Porto), Museum of Contemporary Art - António Cachola Collection, Leal Rios Foundation (Lisbon), EDP Foundation (Lisbon), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin), and MONA, Museum of Old and New Art (Australia).
