Presentation of the gallery
Directed by Jean-Baptiste Barbier, the galerie Barbier specialises in comic book art. The artists she defends have in common their graphic singularity and their high standards, which push them to question the limits of writing in comics, making them major players of the Ninth Art.
For many years, the gallery has accompanied great artists, mainly French, such as Christophe Blain, Blutch, Nicolas de Crécy, Jean-Claude Götting, Philippe Druillet, Pénélope Bagieu, Enki Bilal, Tanino Liberatore and Catherine Meurisse; as well as international artists such as the Englishman Dave McKean or the Swiss Cosey. The gallery also supports young designers by championing emerging talents such as Pierre-Henry Gomont, AJ Dungo and Elene Usdin.
To perfect their enhancement, the gallery produces special editions for its exhibitions: catalogues, collections of drawings, luxury black and white prints, signed by the artists or accompanied by ex libris.
Formerly the Bdartist(e) gallery and then the Barbier & Mathon gallery, it has been in existence since October 16, 2000. Initially located on rue Condorcet, it now has two separate exhibition spaces on rue Choron in Paris, allowing it to present up to two exhibitions at the same time.
Jean-Baptiste Barbier also endeavoured to promote the influence of the artists he defended by curating institutional exhibitions such as "Métal Hurlant (À suiver) 1975-1997: La bande dessinée fait sa révolution..." presented at the Hélène & Édouard Leclerc Fund for Culture in Landerneau between December 2013 and May 2014. In 2022, he co-curated the retrospective dedicated to Christophe Blain: "Drawing Time", presented at the Vaisseau Moebius from March 17 to 20, 2022, as part of the 49th International Comics Festival. In 2023, he co-curated the one dedicated to Philippe Druillet: "The 6 Journeys of Philippe Druillet" presented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angoulême from January 26 to March 12, 2023.
Presentation of the artist in focus
For this new edition, we have the honor to present the work of Catherine Meurisse. In her work, humour and the search for beauty coexist in the same artistic impulse. Her works bear witness to the delight provoked by the observation of art and nature, which she translates with a finesse that is sometimes contemplative, sometimes amused. In her work, the elders, authors and artists are always summoned, serving as a basis as well as an ideal, inscribing her work in a historical and artistic continuity where she lays her personal stone.
We have chosen to show these facets of his work through a body of work that will be on display at our booth at Drawing Now Art Fair 2024.
These works will also be grouped together in a book that will be released in bookstores on March 5, 2024: Le passage, a collection of illustrations where she invites us to observe with her works of art wherever they are found.
